Leonardo could argue against that. He has much better things to do than help this old woman look for a magikarp enthusiast, including hold hands with his girlfriend, get something to eat, maybe watch the sunset while she rests her head on his shoulder.

All of these he avoids mentioning. These stolen moments could only happen far from Lilycove, where there were little chances of anyone from their workplace recognizing them. They're special. Leo supposes they'd be even more special after they dealt with this stupid mission.

they're in petalburg

on a leisure trip, but she supposes league officer isn't a position she can ease herself out from at will. that goes for both of them, actually. when the old lady asks them for help, rhian can't find it in her to say no.

even when the old lady gives them a smile and simply leaves. just up and leaves them to it. off to who knows where. her smile falters.

she turns to leo. he's giving her the lead, it seems.

"well, these ponds are really big. i don't know how we could cover them all." her eyes scan the ponds' rather large perimeters as she speaks. "maybe we should lure the thief somewhere?"

rhian begins pacing around the pond, trying to find anything else they could use to find and capture the magikarp thief.

Leonardo is about to call his milotic for the task when he realizes he left her back home. There was an aquarium in Lilycove where Leonardo found he could leave the milotic for a while, to stretch and socialize with other pokémon of her species without having to leave her out in the wild and without protection.

At the time, it had sounded like a good idea. Truth is he's already missing her.

"Did you bring your azumarill? Easiest way to go about this is to redirect the underwater currents towards a specific location."

He can't think of any option less messier than what he's proposing now, though compromises could be made. The change didn't have to be permanent. In fact, they probably did not want it to be permanent.

leo's mind start to turn. well-greased and well-practiced, it doesn't take long for him to come up with an strategy. rhian listens attentively to his plan, and there is no doubt inside her heart that it would have worked, if they had a pokémon more suited for it than her azumarill.

"i did bring him along, but i'm not sure he can do something as ambitious as redirecting all those currents, leo," she answers honestly. if anything, leo's milotic would be more suited to a task like that—except she's currently in the lilycove aquarium.

realization strikes her like a bucket of cold water, and it's not only because of where they are. as a trainer, rhian's focus had always been on providing utility and support. today she failed at her one job.

Leonardo really liked his suggestion, but Rhian's isn't all that bad either. Less ambitious, sure, but what did it matter being ambitious if they couldn't pull through with the tools at their current disposal?

He could be as ambitious as he wanted in the field of astrophysics. For this mission in specific, they'd go with Rhian's suggestion.

Leonardo stops in his tracks when he allows himself to remember how long shopping usually took with his girlfriend. Rhian loves taking her time and looking at everything new when they go grocery shopping. The possibility of the magikarp thief showing up while they were gone could not be discarded so easily.
